Long-term prognosis of epilepsy in patients with cerebral palsy
Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology Mar 15, 2019
Tsubouchi Y, et al. - Among 72 patients with cerebral palsy (CP) and epilepsy, researchers evaluated the long-term natural course and prognosis of epilepsy in CP patients. For this retrospective study, they reviewed data from medical records, electroencephalography (EEG), and neuroimaging findings. They performed time-to-event statistical analyses to analyze the remission outcome and the Cox regression model for multivariate analyses. Investigators found that the rate of remission of epilepsy in CP increases to young adulthood. Ending of antiepileptic drugs may be possible at older ages in selected cases without relapse. Older age, motor disability being able to roll over/crawl but not able to sit, intellectual disability with an IQ between 36 and 70, normal findings on neuroimaging, and CP type other than spastic quadriplegia were included advantageous factors for seizure remission.
