Long-term perioperative outcomes of pure laparoscopic liver resection vs open liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma: A retrospective study
Surgical Endoscopy Jun 07, 2019
Yoon YI, et al. - The perioperative and long-term oncological outcomes of laparoscopic liver resection (LLR) vs open liver resection (OLR) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were compared in well-matched patient groups using propensity score matching. Reviewing medical records of patients with HCC who underwent liver resection, researchers identified 2335 patients for inclusion in this study and divided them into LLR (n = 264) and OLR (n = 2071) groups. LLR and OLR were comparable regarding long-term oncological outcomes for selected patients. Multiple benefits were evident in association with LLR, even for selected patients with cirrhosis who underwent major hepatectomy. For selected patients, they suggest considering LLR for HCC performed by an experienced surgeon as a safe and feasible alternative to OLR.
