Long-term outcomes in patients with pulmonary embolism: Results from a longitudinal cohort study
Internal Medicine Journal Jun 23, 2019
Lamba M, et al. - Via performing a longitudinal prospective cohort study involving 501 patients with clinical suspicion of pulmonary embolism (PE), researchers assessed the association of PE with increased risk of mortality or serious clinical events (SCE), and investigated predictors of mortality and SCE. Age, malignancy, and congestive heart failure were major determinants related to increased risk of SCE and mortality. No correlation of elevated D-dimer concentration in patients without PE with the diagnosis of malignancy, during follow-up, was observed. Hence, no similarities between PE and the risk of all-cause mortality or SCE was observed. Further, advancing age and underlying comorbidities were the major determinants of poor clinical outcomes.
