Long-term outcomes in patients presenting with optic neuritis: Analyses of the MSBase registry
Journal of the Neurological Sciences Sep 09, 2021
Kenney R, Liu M, Patil S, et al. - This study of the MSBase cohort revealed better visual and neurological outcomes in relation to treatment after optic neuritis (ON) vs no treatment. Overall, early treatment is supported for patients presenting with ON as the first manifestation of MS.
Data for 60,933 patients were obtained from the MSBase Registry.
Inclusion criteria (age ≥ 18 years, clinically isolated syndrome, ON-onset, baseline visit within 6 months of onset, and at least one follow-up visit) were met by 1,317 patients.
935 patients received treatment at some point in the disease course, while 382 were never treated.
A median follow-up of 5.2 years (IQR 2.4–9.3) was conducted.
Decreased risk and delayed conversion to clinically definite MS (HR = 0.70), sustained expanded disability status scale progression (HR = 0.46) and sustained visual function score (HR = 0.41) progression all were seen in relation to treatment.
