Long-term outcomes after postnatal cytomegalovirus infection in low birthweight preterm infants: A systematic review
The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal May 19, 2021
Stark A, Cantrell S, Greenberg RG, et al. - A systematic review of English and non-English articles utilizing MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, CINAHL, and Web of Science was performed to evaluate the long-term outcomes for low birthweight preterm infants after postnatally acquired cytomegalovirus (pCMV) infection. Preterm infants with pCMV, particularly those with symptomatic infection, can have long-term pulmonary and neurodevelopmental morbidity compared with their pCMV negative counterparts. The findings emphasise the importance of pCMV detection and prevention in preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit. To fully identify outcomes and decide whether treatment improves outcomes, large prospective studies are required.
