Long-term outcomes after group B streptococcus infection: A cohort study
Archives of Diseases in Childhood Jul 22, 2018
Yeo KT, et al. - In this population-based cohort study, the researchers characterized the risk of death and hospitalisation until adolescence of children after group B streptococcus (GBS) infection during infancy. Participants in the study were all registered live births from 2000 to 2011. Particularly during the first 5 years, the risk of poor health outcomes for GBS-infected children remains elevated despite decreasing GBS rates. They found that survivors continue to be at increased risk of death and chronic conditions requiring hospitalisations, like cerebral palsy and epilepsy. The obtained data indicate that children with GBS were hospitalised more frequently, for longer duration and were at higher risk for problems with genitourinary and nervous systems.
