Long-term outcomes after extracorporeal life support for acute respiratory failure
Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia Jul 27, 2018
McDonald MD, et al. - In this mixed-methods outcomes study including survivors of extracorporeal life support (ECLS), the prevalence of functional and psychological impairment was determined in these subjects. Additionally, the needs of survivors were also evaluated in order to guide development of an effective follow-up program. They found that survivors of ECLS persistently suffered physical and psychological impairments. Patients demonstrated a consistent willingness to debrief on their hospital course and receive education on possible long-term impacts. Improved outcomes can be achieved via structured follow-up that may allow early identification of psychological and physical impairments.
