Long term outcomes after concurrent ipsilateral nephrectomy vs kidney-sparing surgery for high-risk, intraabdominal neuroblastoma
Journal of Pediatric Surgery Jul 24, 2018
Fahy AS, et al. - Researchers investigated the renal late effects and long-term survival for patients who underwent kidney-sparing surgery (KSS) vs concurrent ipsilateral nephrectomy (CIN) for high-risk, intraabdominal neuroblastoma (HRIN) by conducting a retrospective analysis of patients diagnosed with HRIN between January 1998 and December 2008 in a tertiary referral center. Compared to KSS, an increase in local recurrence or inferior survival was not observed in association with CIN but it does result in reduced kidney function (estimated glomerular filtration rate of 90 ml/min/1.73 m2 for CIN vs 127 ml/min/1.73 m2 for KSS, p=0.03) but without significant impact on clinical outcome.
