Long-term outcome of vein of Galen malformation

Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology Nov 20, 2019

Taffin H, Maurey H, Ozanne A, et al. - According to the STROBE statement and in accordance with French legislation, researchers conducted this investigation to characterize the long-term results of children by the time they reached school age with the vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation (VGAM). For this retrospective observational study, patients with at least one Francophone parent, aged between 6 and 11 years at the time of long-term evaluation were involved. All 52 patients with at least one Francophone parent have been incorporated. Thirty-three patients were alive and 19 patients had died at the long-term evaluation time-point. Findings suggested an association of risk of postnatal death with severe neonatal cardiac failure or isosystemic or suprasystemic pulmonary hypertension. Even in the absence of encephalomalacia at birth, long-term outcome of patients with VGAM seems to be less favourable than outcome described at the short- and medium-term. Even good-outcome patients often have neuropsychological conditions that can impair learning and require effective therapy or medical management.
