Long-term outcome of re-irradiation for recurrent or second primary head and neck cancer: A multi-institutional study of AIRO—Head and Neck working group
Head & Neck Aug 02, 2019
Orlandi E, Bonomo P, Ferella L, et al. - In this retrospective analysis, researchers reported the long-term result of patients undergoing re-irradiation (re-RT) for a recurrent or second primary head and neck cancer (RSPHNCs) in seven Italian tertiary centers, while testing the recently published Multi-Institution Reirradation (MIRI) recursive partitioning analysis (RPA). The study sample consisted of 159 patients. In a multivariable Cox analysis, prognostic factors for overall survival (OS) selected by a random forest model were involved. Data reported that five-year OS was 43.5%. The information strengthens Re-RT's survival benefit for chosen RSPHNC patients. In the population, MIRI RPA has not been validated. Independent factors for better OS were nasopharyngeal site, no organ dysfunction, and re-RT volume < 36 cm3.
