Long-term outcome of pars plana vitrectomy for retained posterior segment intraocular foreign body secondary to gunshot injury
Clinical Ophthalmology May 08, 2021
Ghoraba HH, Leila M, Zaky AG, et al. - In this retrospective interventional case series, researchers reported the long-term outcome of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for management of retained posterior segment intraocular foreign body (IOFB) secondary to gunshot injury. This investigation was carried out in a retina tertiary center, Magrabi Eye hospital, Tanta, Egypt. The sample consisted of consecutive patients who had PPV for retained posterior segment IOFB secondary to gunshot injury. A total of 103 eyes from 103 patients were used in the study. The use of PPV to remove IOFB caused by a gunshot injury resulted in a long-term functional outcome with excellent globe survival. Poor initial BCVA, posterior pole IOFB, associated lens damage, and retinal detachment are all important negative prognostic factors for final BCVA but not for globe survival.
