Long-term outcome of ovarian function in women with intermittent premature ovarian insufficiency
Clinical Endocrinology Jan 20, 2019
Bachelot A, et al. - In a large cohort of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) women, researchers characterized the outcome following the resumption of ovarian function. For this investigation, the cumulative incidence of ovarian function resumption and risk factors arresting this resumption during follow-up were determined at the university medical centre. Study participants included 507 patients. Findings revealed that the cumulative incidence of pregnancy was 3·5% in the whole cohort and 15·3% in patients with resumption of ovarian function. According to this cross-sectional study, the resumption of ovarian function in POI women is not a rare or brief phenomenon. In univariate analysis, high FSH and DHEA levels in the initial evaluation were risk factors for the arrest of the ovarian function resumption. In multivariate analysis, the risk factors for the arrest of this resumption were high FSH levels in the initial evaluation and older age in the diagnosis. The identification of and duration of the predictive factors of this resumption increases the knowledge of the natural history of POI and improves medical management, in particular, infertility counselling for these patients.
