Long-term outcome after surgery for a localized retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcoma in elderly patients: Results from a retrospective, single-center study
Annals of Surgical Oncology Jul 11, 2018
Sourrouille I, et al. - In elderly patients (70 years and older), short- and long-term results after curative surgery for a retroperitoneal sarcoma (RPS) were evaluated via a retrospective analysis of data for all patients operated on in a single, tertiary care center for a nonmetastatic RPS. Researchers identified 296 patients with an RPS treated between 1994 and 2015, and of these, 60 (20%) were aged 70 years and older (median age 74 years; range 70–85). Outcomes suggest that in select elderly patients, curative surgery is feasible, but with higher mortality and morbidity rates than in younger patients. It allowed a prolonged survival among these individuals.
