Long term nutritional and growth outcomes of children completing an intensive multidisciplinary tube-feeding weaning program
Clinical Nutrition Feb 25, 2020
Sadeh-Kon T, Fradkin A, Dunitz-Scheer M, et al. - Given an often requirement of special treatment in children on long-term tube-feeding for oral feeding transitioning, researchers here investigated the long-term impacts of a “Graz-model” based weaning program on nutritional status and growth. Participants were 58 children who were on long-term enteral nutritional support and were provided a 3-week multidisciplinary weaning treatment (64% male; aged 0.5–13.0 years). At the 3-week time-point, they observed a significant reduction in energy intake. Outcomes suggest that the intensive weaning program associated short-term reductions in nutritional intake and body weight are reversible; further, they noted stable growth patterns over 12 months. They recommend undertaking further follow-up to ensure continued positive development in these children.
