Long-term neurological outcomes in patients aged over 90 years who are admitted to the intensive care unit following cardiac arrest
Resuscitation Aug 28, 2018
Roedl K, et al. - As the number of cardiac arrests (CA) in very elderly patients (≥ 90 years) is expected to increase dramatically due to the world`s rapidly ageing population, researchers investigated patients ≥ 90 years (nonagenarians) and their long-term outcomes and the characteristics of CA- and intensive care unit (ICU). At their ICU, they recognized 657 patients ≥ 90 years who were treated during the study period; of these, 48 patients with CA and successful resuscitation were identified. The 46% of effectively resuscitated nonagenarians survived the ICU stay with favorable neurological outcome seen in the majority at ICU discharge. This justifies resuscitation and post-CA care, in the highly selected group of very elderly patients (≥ 90 years).
