Long-term mortality and cause of death for patients treated in Intensive Care Units due to poisoning

Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Mar 21, 2019

Lindqvist E, et al. - In 6,730 adults (aged ≥ 19 years) who received treatment for poisoning in a Swedish Intensive Care Unit between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2011, researchers determined long-term mortality and cause of death via the National Patient Register, the Swedish Intensive Care Register, and the Cause of Death Register. According to findings, 1-year mortality was 4.5% (303 participants), with an overweight of men among the decreased (59.1%). The investigators noted that the 2-year mortality was 7.2%. Over 2 years, overall long-term survival was found to be slightly higher among women. Risk of premature death was significantly reduced in younger patients 1 and 2 years following an ICU hospitalization for non-fatal poisoning vs the general population.
