Long-term mortality and cause of death for patients treated in Intensive Care Units due to poisoning
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Mar 01, 2019
Lindqvist E, et al. - Using the National Patient Register, the Swedish Intensive Care Register and the Cause of Death Register, researchers assessed long-term mortality and cause of death in patients treated in the ICU for poisoning. This national observational study involved 6730 patients ≥19 years admitted to a Swedish Intensive Care Unit for poisoning between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2011. According to the findings, a significantly increased risk of premature death was observed in younger patients, vs general population, one and two years following an ICU hospitalisation for non-fatal poisoning. Despite a previously known recent severe poisoning, a new poisoning incident was found to be responsible for the death of a large majority of the patients.
