Long-term mortality and cause of death for patients treated in Intensive Care Units due to poisoning
Acta Anaesthesiologica Scandinavica Nov 09, 2018
Lindqvist E, et al. - In this national observational study, researchers used the National Patient Register, the Swedish Intensive Care Register and the Cause of Death Register to determine long-term mortality and cause of death in patients treated in the ICU for poisoning. Participants were all patients ≥19 years admitted to a Swedish Intensive Care Unit between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2011 with an ICD-10 code for poisoning. This study included overall 6,730 patients. Findings revealed that, compared to the general population, younger patients had a noticeably increased risk of premature death one and two years after an ICU hospitalization for non-fatal poisoning. Despite a previously known recent severe poisoning, a new poisoning incident was found responsible for the death of a large majority.
