Long-term implant survivorship and modes of failure in simultaneous concurrent bilateral total knee arthroplasty
Journal of Arthroplasty Aug 23, 2019
Yong TM, et al. - Researchers sought to report long-term implant survivorship and modes of failure in simultaneous concurrent bilateral total knee arthroplasty (TKA) via retrospectively reviewing 266 consecutive patients (532 knees) who underwent simultaneous concurrent bilateral TKA. Outcomes revealed an association of simultaneous concurrent bilateral TKA with a higher risk of reoperation for the patient when both knees are evaluated but with similar implant survivorship to the literature when each knee was evaluated in isolation. The revision was performed on 44 patients (17%). The analysis revealed the implant survival at 5, 10, 15, and 20-year time points of 96%, 84%, 71%, and 59%, respectively. The most common indications for revision were aseptic loosening (40%), polyethylene wear (34%), and infection (11%).
