Long-term functional, psychological, emotional, and social outcomes in survivors of firearm injuries
JAMA Jan 23, 2020
Vella MA, Warshauer A, Tortorello G, et al. – Via performing a prospective cohort study, researchers determined long-term functional, psychological, emotional, and social outcomes among survivors of firearm injuries. They examined individual-reported outcomes among gunshot wound (GSW) survivors between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2017, at a single urban level I trauma center. Of 3,088 individuals identified, 183 were included in the final analysis. They examined data between June 1, 2018, and June 20, 2019. According to findings, the lasting impact of firearm injury reaches far beyond mortality and economic burden. After the injury, survivors of GSWs may have negative outcomes for years. These results demonstrate that early identification and initiation of long-term longitudinal care is paramount.
