Long-term functional outcomes and quality of life in patients with Hirschsprung's disease

Meinds RJ, et al. - In this cross-sectional study, researchers investigated the long-term functional outcomes and quality of life (QoL) in patients with Hirschsprung's disease (HD). Analyzing 346 patients with pathologically proven Hirschsprung's disease, older than 7 years, they realized that functional outcomes were better in adults than children with HD, but with persistence of defaecation disorders in a substantial group of adults. A redo pull-through procedure was more frequently performed among patients who had faecal incontinence. Defaecation disorders, especially constipation, was noted to influence negatively the QoL domains. These effects were more prominent in children than adults.
