Long-term follow-up study of liver-related outcome after bilio-pancreatic diversion in patients with initial, significant liver damage
Digestive Diseases and Sciences Apr 12, 2018
Giannini EG, et al. - Experts enquiered regarding the effects of bariatric surgery on long-term liver disease-related outcome in obese patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and significant liver damage. The enrollees underwent bilio-pancreatic diversion for morbid obesity and had significant fibrosis at intraoperative liver biopsy. Findings revealed that complications of liver disease did not develop in the long term after bilio-pancreatic diversion among subjects with NAFLD and proven histological liver damage at surgery. An improvement was noted in the noninvasive parameters of liver damage. Therefore, preexisting liver damage did not serve as a contraindication to bilio-pancreatic diversion.
