Long-term follow-up of all-polyethylene tibial components when used for oncological endoprosthetic reconstruction
The Bone & Joint Journal Feb 09, 2020
Bernthal NM, Burke ZDC, Hegde V, et al. - This study was undertaken to analyze the long-term mechanical survivorship, explain the modes of all-cause failure, and distinguish risk factors for mechanical failure of all-polyethylene tibial components in endoprosthetic reconstruction. Researchers performed a retrospective database review including a sum of 278 individuals who were distinguished with 289 all-polyethylene tibial components between 1980 and 2019. For revision for mechanical failure, individuals with all-polyethylene tibial components were isolated and examined. When used for tumour endoprostheses, the long-term mechanical survivorship of all-polyethylene tibial components was excellent. In this analysis, tumour surgeons should consider applying these components for their durability and the secondary advantages of decreased cost and ease of removal and revision. Nevertheless, when using all-polyethylene tibial components, caution should be taken in the revision setting as a significantly higher rate of mechanical failure was seen in this group of individuals.
