Long-term effects of disasters on seniors with diabetes: Evidence from Hurricanes Katrina and Rita
Diabetes Care Sep 29, 2019
Quast T, et al. - Via conducting a retrospective cohort analysis of Medicare enrollment and claims data covering four states and ∼10 years, researchers estimated the long-run mortality impacts of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita on seniors with diabetes. The study sample consisted of 170,328 matched affected individuals. Investigators found that the affected subjects had a nearly 40% higher risk of all-cause mortality in the first month after the storms, but by the end of the full observation period, the difference fell to < 6%. The mortality risks of heart disease and nephritis also showed the greatest differences right after the storms. Among the subjects affected, the risk of all-cause mortality was higher for those moving to another county, with a particularly significant difference among those moving to an affected county.
