Long-term effectiveness of faecal immunochemical test screening for proximal and distal colorectal cancers
Gut Jan 29, 2021
Chiu HM, Jen GHH, Wang YW, et al. - A prospective cohort study of the Taiwanese nationwide biennial fecal immunochemical test (FIT) screening was conducted to assess the impacts of FIT for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening on the overall and site-specific long-term efficacy of population-based organized service screening. In total, 5,417,699 eligible individuals were requested to be screened from 2004 through 2009; they were followed up until 2014. A large-scale population-based biennial FIT screening shows a significant 34% reduction of advanced-stage CRCs and a 40% decline of death from CRC with larger long-term efficacy in the distal colon than the proximal colon. The findings provide a strong and consistent evidence-based policy to support sustainable population-based, globally organized FIT service screening. The difference in site-specific long-term efficacy also offers an insight into the treatment for lower FIT screening efficacy in the proximal colon.
