Long term effectiveness of electrochemotherapy for the treatment of lower lip squamous cell carcinoma
Journal of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery Sep 06, 2018
Gargiulo M, et al. - Experts assessed the long-term effectiveness of electrochemotherapy (ECT) (a therapeutic approach using the local application of electrical pulses that permeabilize cell membranes to enhance the uptake of low-permeant chemotherapeutic agents, which increases their cytotoxic effects) for the treatment of lower lip squamous cell carcinoma (SSC). Findings suggested the safety and efficacy of intravenous bleomycin-based ECT therapy for SCC of the lower lip. By sustaining the function and aesthetic appearance of the affected area, ECT improves patients’ quality-of-life. For elderly and frail patients who, due to their state of health are not suitable for or refuse surgical interventions, ECT could be a therapeutic option.
