Long-term complications in youth-onset type 2 diabetes
New England Journal of Medicine Aug 02, 2021
Bjornstad P, Drews KL, Caprio S, et al. - Given an increasing prevalence of type 2 diabetes has been reported among youths but there is little knowledge about the occurrence of related complications as these youths transition to adulthood, researchers explored this topic in this study. Participants from a previous multicenter clinical trial (from 2004 to 2011) who had onset of type 2 diabetes in youth and had completed the trial were transitioned to metformin with or without insulin and were enrolled in an observational follow-up analysis (conducted from 2011 to 2020), which was performed in two phases; the findings of this follow-up study are described here. Findings showed a steady increase in the risk of complications, including microvascular complications, over time in these participants who had onset of type 2 diabetes in youth, and such risk of complications affected the majority of participants by the time of young adulthood. Participants of minority race and ethnic group as well as those with hyperglycemia, hypertension, and dyslipidemia more commonly developed complications.
