Long-term comparative study on open vs laparoscopic biliopancreatic diversion
Surgical Endoscopy Mar 07, 2021
Bianchi A, Pagan-Pomar A, Jimenez-Segovia M, et al. - Researchers examined how the laparoscopy influence weight loss parameters in morbid obese patients who underwent surgery according to Scopinaro’s biliopancreatic diversion (BPD). In addition, they examined early and late complications related to the open and laparoscopic approach of this technique. A longitudinal retrospective study was performed including consecutive patients undergoing BPD due to morbid obesity between 1999 and 2015. They consecutively enrolled 277 patients and divided them in two groups: open BPD and laparoscopic BPD. As per outcomes, laparoscopic BPD is identified to be a safe approach that aids in shortening hospital stay compared with open surgery and allows a drastic decrease in the incidence of incisional hernias.
