Long-term cognitive outcomes in patients with pediatric-onset vs adult-onset multiple sclerosis

JAMA Neurology Jun 21, 2019

McKay KA, et al. - In this population-based longitudinal cohort study involving 5,704 candidates, researchers compared long-term information-processing efficiency between patients with pediatric-onset multiple sclerosis (POMS) and adult-onset MS (AOMS). In total, 46,429 unique Symbol Digit Modalities Test (SDMT) scores were analyzed. The SDMT score decreased more quickly for POMS patients vs AOMS patients. According to findings, patients with POMS exhibited a faster decrease in information-processing efficiency over time and it was more probable they would experience cognitive impairment vs AOMS patients, regardless of age or disease duration. Investigators suggested that cognitive changes should be closely monitored in children and adolescents with multiple sclerosis to help to address the possible challenges posed by early-onset multiple sclerosis to cognitive abilities later in life.
