Long-term clinical outcomes in a cohort of adults with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus
Arthritis & Rheumatology Feb 04, 2019
Groot N, et al. - Investigators analyzed disease activity, damage, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) to evaluate the clinical features and HRQoL in adults with childhood-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE; n=111). About 62% of participants experienced damages like cerebrovascular accidents, renal transplants, and replacement arthroplasties, and they found that myocardial infarctions typically took place at a younger age. Damage accrual was associated with disease duration, antiphospholipid antibody positivity, and hypertension. Overall, most study participants developed significant damage at a young age and had impaired HRQoL without achieving drug-free remission, highlighting the significant impact of childhood-onset SLE on future life.
