Long-term clinical effectiveness of continuous positive airway pressure therapy vs non-invasive ventilation therapy in patients with obesity hypoventilation syndrome: A multicentre, open-label, randomised controlled trial
The Lancet May 01, 2019
Masa JF, et al. - In patients with obesity hypoventilation syndrome, researchers analyzed the long-term clinical efficacy of continuous positive airway pressure therapy vs non-invasive ventilation therapy. The study sample consisted of patients (aged 15–80 years) with untreated obesity hypoventilation syndrome and an apnea-hypopnea index of ≥ 30 events/hour. According to findings, non-invasive ventilation and continuous positive airway pressure have comparable long-term effectiveness in stable patients with obesity hypoventilation syndrome and severe obstructive sleep apnea. Due to the lower complexity and cost of continuous positive airway pressure, continuous positive airway pressure could be the preferred positive first-line airway pressure treatment modality until more studies are available.
