Long-term asthma-related readmissions: Comparison between children admitted and not admitted to the intensive care unit for critical asthma
Journal of Asthma Oct 19, 2019
Jroundi I, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective cohort study to compare children admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for asthma vs those with a non-ICU hospitalization in the United States, for time to asthma-related readmission. They also investigated the risk factors related to readmission among children admitted in the ICU. They observed shorter time to asthma-related readmission in the ICU group vs the non-ICU group but the two groups did not differ in terms of time to asthma-related emergency department visit. Among children admitted to the ICU, a higher risk of asthma-related readmission was observed in correlation with being preschool-aged, female, Black, and having lower household income and a longer length of stay during the initial hospitalization. Florida-specific risk factors were preschool age and Medicaid, while Hispanic ethnicity was identified as New York-specific risk factor. Findings revealed an increased risk of asthma-related readmission in children admitted to the ICU for asthma vs children not admitted to the ICU, and certain risk factors conferred an even higher risk.
