Long‐term endoscopic surveillance for Barrett’s esophagus in Japan: A multicenter prospective cohort study
Digestive Endoscopy Dec 11, 2020
Norita K, Koike T, Saito M, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to estimate the cancer risk of Barrett’s esophagus (BE) in Japan using the original prospective multicenter cohort. Over the period 2010 to 2012, a total of 98 BE patients with a maximum length of ≥ 2 cm were enrolled and received at least 1 follow-up endoscopy for 5 years thereafter. Overall, the median endoscopic follow‐up period was 59.9 months, reflecting a total of 427 patient‐years of observation. This is the largest prospective endoscopy follow-up study to examine the occurrence of unequivocal BE esophageal adenocarcinoma with a maximum length of ≥ 2 cm in Japan. Although a further large‐scale study will be needed to validate the outcomes, the cancer risk of BE in Japan would be lower than previously documented.
