Local recurrence of benign, borderline, and malignant phyllodes tumors of the breast: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Annals of Surgical Oncology Jan 11, 2019
Lu Y, et al. - In this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers investigated local recurrence (LR) rates among the three grades (benign, borderline, and malignant) of phyllodes tumors (PTs). Further, they assessed various risk factors for LR. Fifty-four studies with 9,234 individual cases were reviewed revealing pooled LR rates of 8% for benign, 13% for borderline, and 18% for malignant PTs. They observed a significant increase in the risk of LR from benign to borderline to malignant PTs. Risk factors for LR comprise mitoses, tumor border, stromal cellularity, stromal atypia, stromal overgrowth, tumor necrosis, type of surgery, and surgical margin status. Breast-conserving surgery vs mastectomy and positive vs negative surgical margins were noted to be significantly related to an increased LR risk, but only in malignant PTs.
