Local parastomal hernia repair with biological mesh is safe and effective
The American Journal of Surgery Aug 16, 2017
Hufford T, et al. – Authors undertook this study with the aim to evaluate the efficacy, morbidity and safety of local parastomal hernia repair using biological mesh. As per findings, local parastomal hernia repairs seemed associated with moderate recurrence rates, very low morbidity and consistent with the current literature. The sandwich technique proved to have a significantly lower recurrence rate in comparison to underlay or overlay techniques. In comparison to traditional circular incisions, keyhole incisions seemed associated with less recurrence. Findings revealed no association of biologic mesh type with any difference in outcomes. They identified local parastomal hernia repair with biologic mesh as a safe procedure with very low morbidity and acceptable recurrence rate, especially using the sandwich repair technique.
