lncRNA H19 predicts poor prognosis in patients with melanoma and regulates cell growth, invasion, migration and epithelial–mesenchymal transition in melanoma cells

Shi G, et al. - In recent studies, long non-coding RNAs have been implicated in the pathogenesis of malignant melanoma, so researchers assessed the role of the long non-coding RNA H19 in melanoma and considered the underlying molecular mechanisms. In clinical samples and melanoma cells, they used quantitative real-time PCR to investigate the expression levels of H19. Using Cell Counting Kit 8, cell invasion, and wound healing assays, they assessed cell growth and cell metastasis. They detected a high expression of H19 in melanoma tissues vs normal adjacent skin tissues. They also observed significantly higher level tissue expression of H19 from melanoma patients with metastasis, vs that from patients without distant metastasis. Overall, upregulation of H19 was found to act as a contributor to melanoma development and progression.
