Living at home after emergency hospital admission: A prospective cohort study in older adults with and without cognitive spectrum disorder
BMC Medicine Dec 14, 2018
Burton JK, et al. - In a district general hospital in Scotland, authors examined the role of cognitive spectrum disorders (CSD) on the probability of living at home 30 days after discharge or being newly admitted to a care home on 5570 subjects aged ≥ 65 years and received the Older Persons Routine Acute Assessment (OPRAA). After adjustment for all other variables, those with delirium superimposed on dementia were the least likely to experience a positive outcome, followed by those with dementia alone, then those with unspecified cognitive impairment and those with delirium alone. People with CSD were at a considerably higher risk of not returning home after hospitalisation. They estimated 236 cases with CSDs for new admissions to care homes on discharge. Most affected individuals with delirium were observed superimposed on dementia. There were no statistically significant associations with sex, area-based deprivation and polypharmacy.
