Liver transplantation in unauthorized immigrants in the United States
Hepatology Feb 01, 2020
Lee BP, et al. - In the present study, the researchers sought to evaluate the national landscape of liver transplantation (LT) for unauthorized immigrants and to explore patient and graft survival post-LT by residency status. Between March 2012 and December 2018, all US LT recipients who were linked to Pew Center of Research data were involved to determine the population of unauthorized immigrants in each US state and by country of origin, based on US Census data. Data reported that Mexico, Guatemala, China, El Salvador, and India were the most common countries of birth among LT recipients who were unauthorized immigrants. Unauthorized immigration status (vs US citizens/residents) was linked to a comparable risk of graft failure and death in the competing risk analysis. LT is uncommon for unauthorized immigrants and there are differences in state-by-state access to LT. Survival of patients and graft among unauthorized immigrants is comparable to that of the citizens/residents.
