Liver fibrosis and fatty liver are independently associated with cardiovascular disease risk

Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Jun 25, 2021

Tamaki N, Kurosaki M, Takahashi Y, et al. - Researchers undertook this prospective study to examine the relationship of liver fibrosis and fatty liver with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk independent of already recognized CVD risk comorbidities. They evaluated liver fibrosis by serum fibrosis markers including FIB-4, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score, and Wisteria floribunda agglutinin-positive Mac-2 binding protein, and performed ultrasonography to diagnose fatty liver. Existence of a significant connection of both advanced fibrosis and the presence of fatty liver with a high CVD risk, independent of diabetes mellitus, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, was found. Thus, a relationship of both liver fibrosis and fatty liver with CVD risk was evident independent of already known CVD risk comorbidities. The evaluation of liver fibrosis and fatty liver may have utility for detecting high CVD risk individuals.
