Liver fibrosis and accelerated immune dysfunction (immunosenescence) among HIV-infected Russians with heavy alcohol consumption - An observational cross-sectional study
BMC Gastroenterology Jan 08, 2020
So-Armah K, Freiberg M, Cheng D, et al. - Among ART-naïve HIV-infected Russians with heavy alcohol consumption, researchers examined the link between advanced liver fibrosis/cirrhosis, defined as FIB-4 > 3.25, APRI ≥ 1.5, or Fibroscan measurement ≥ 10.5 kPa, and alterations in T-cell subsets. Using multiple linear regression adjusted for potential confounders, analyses were conducted. Among the 130 candidates, mean age was 34 years, involved, 25 were categorized as having evidence of advanced liver fibrosis/cirrhosis. In this exploratory study of recent drinkers with HIV, advanced liver fibrosis/cirrhosis was not significantly linked to these senescent T-cell phenotypes. Future studies will determine whether liver fibrosis is associated with changes in these and other potentially senescent T-cell subsets among those with HIV viral suppression and more advanced, longstanding liver disease.
