Lipid levels are inversely associated with infectious and all-cause mortality: International MONDO study results
Journal of Lipid Research Jun 18, 2018
Kaysen G, et al. - Researchers examined the link between lipids and infection-related or cardiovascular events (CV) mortality in patients with end stage renal disease. They used the international Monitoring Dialysis Outcomes (MONDO) database and applied Cox proportional models with time-varying covariates to assess associations of LDL cholesterol (LDL-C), HDL cholesterol (HDL-C), and TGs with all-cause, CV, infectious, and other causes of death. They reported a lower risk of death from infection or other non- CV causes was related to higher LDL-C and HDL-C. Lower all-cause death risk was independently correlated with higher LDL-C, HDL-C, and TGs. They also found that LDL-C was related to attenuated all-cause and infectious, but not CV, mortality. This led to the inverse association with all-cause mortality.
