Limited clinical utility of intraoperative frozen section during parathyroidectomy for treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism
American Journal of Surgery Feb 08, 2019
Li J, et al. - The utility of intraoperative frozen section (IFS) performed during parathyroidectomy for treatment of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHP) was determined in addition to investigating the patients for whom it is most helpful. Performing a retrospective chart review for 262 patients who underwent parathyroidectomy for treatment of PHP, researchers identified no influence of information gained with IFS on the operative plan during parathyroidectomy for treatment of PHP for the majority of patients. IFS seems to be most beneficial for patients who present with normal PTH and hypercalcemia, or those who do not localize preoperatively.
