Lifetime risk of common neurological diseases in the elderly population
Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry Oct 05, 2018
Licher S, et al. - Within the prospective population-based Rotterdam Study, researchers quantified the burden of common neurological disease in older adults with regard to lifetime risks, including their co-occurrence and preventive potential, within a competing risk framework. Between 1990 and 2016, lifetime risk of dementia, stroke, and parkinsonism were studied. They found that one in two women were diagnosed with dementia, stroke or parkinsonism during their lifetime, though for men this risk approximated one in three in this population-based study with long-term follow-up. These discoveries fortify the need to focus on preemptive interventions to lessen this burden in the ageing population.
