Lifetime recreational moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and ovarian cancer risk: A case–control study
International Journal of Cancer Feb 08, 2020
Grundy A, Ho V, Abrahamowicz M, et al. - By performing a population-based case–control analysis in Montreal, Canada from 2011 to 2016, including 485 cases and 887 controls, researchers assessed ovarian cancer risk in relation to participation in moderate-to-vigorous recreational physical activity (MVPA). They gathered data on lifetime engagement in many recreational physical activities, which was utilized to estimate MVPA for each participant. Average energy expenditure over the lifetime and in particular age-periods, expressed as units of metabolic equivalents (METs)-hours per week, defined MVPA. For each 28.5 MET-hr/week increase of lifetime recreational MVPA, the adjusted OR (95% CI) was estimated to be 1.11 (0.99–1.24) for ovarian cancer overall. For individual age-periods, weaker ORs were reported. When analyzed by menopausal status, the OR (95% CI) for lifetime MVPA was estimated to be 1.21 (1.00–1.45) and 1.04 (0.89–1.21) for those diagnosed before menopause and for those diagnosed postmenopausally, respectively. The suggestive positive links were found to be stronger for invasive ovarian cancers and more particularly for high-grade serous carcinomas. A decreased ovarian cancer risk related to MVPA was not supported by the findings.
