Lifestyle modifications alone or combined with hormonal contraceptives improve sexual dysfunction in women with polycystic ovary syndrome
Fertility and Sterility Oct 15, 2020
Weiss MS, Roe AH, Allison KC, et al. - Researchers conducted secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial, oral contraceptive pills and weight loss in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), with the aim to determine the prevalence of female sexual dysfunction in a well-defined PCOS population. In addition, they investigated the influence of common PCOS treatments on sexual function. Among 114 assessed women with PCOS, interventions comprised continuous oral contraceptive pill (OCP) or intensive lifestyle modification (Lifestyle) or the combination (Combined) for 16 weeks. Findings suggest a high prevalence of female sexual dysfunction among women with PCOS. Common treatments for PCOS, including intensive lifestyle modification and the combination of intensive lifestyle modification and OCPs, are noted to be beneficial in improving sexual function in these women; the mechanism for these improvements is probably multifactorial.
