Life's Simple 7 and the risk of atrial fibrillation: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis Jun 09, 2018
Ogunmoroti O, et al. - In the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (a prospective cohort study of adults free of cardiovascular disease at baseline), researchers evaluated the link between the American Heart Association's Life's Simple 7 (LS7) metrics (smoking, physical activity, body mass index, diet, blood pressure, total cholesterol and blood glucose) and the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF). Classification of the LS7 metrics into ideal (assigned 2 points), intermediate (1 point) or poor (0 points) was followed by a summation of score (0–8; inadequate, 9-10, average and 11-14, optimal for cardiovascular health). They found that optimal LS7 status was related to a 27% lower risk of AF vs inadequate status. The incidence and burden of AF may be attenuated via promoting ideal cardiovascular health.
