Lidocaine combined with magnesium sulfate preserved hemodynamic stability during general anesthesia without prolonging neuromuscular blockade: A randomized, double-blind, controlled trial
BMC Anesthesiology Apr 02, 2021
Paula-Garcia WN, Oliveira-Paula GH, de Boer HD, et al. - Researchers assessed the impacts of lidocaine and magnesium sulfate, isolated or combined, on hemodynamic parameters and on the cisatracurium-induced neuromuscular blockade (NMB) in this study. Participants were 64 patients, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status I and II, receiving elective surgery with similar pain stimuli. These were randomized to four groups. Participants were administered a bolus of lidocaine and magnesium sulfate prior to the tracheal intubation and a continuous infusion during the operation. Findings demonstrated a significant role of intravenous lidocaine in the hemodynamic stability of patients under general anesthesia with no additional effect exerted on the NMB, even together with magnesium sulfate. Magnesium sulfate not only prolonged all NMB recovery features without modifying the onset speed but also enhanced the train of four recovery rate without T1 recovery. These observations may assist clinical decisions involving the employment of these drugs by promoting their association in multimodal anesthesia or other therapeutic purposes.
