Leptin as a potential prognostic marker of the severity of COVID-19 infection in obese patients

Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases Dec 15, 2021

Baltodano-Calle MJ, Polo-Vasquez JS, Romani-Pozo A, et al. - Obesity has been linked with poorer outcomes of COVID-19 infections since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although adipokines have an apparent role, evidence might exist supporting a significant role of leptin in the underlying mechanisms of severe COVID-19 in obese patients due to its important immunological function.

  • Researchers identified multiple studies supporting the correlation between leptin and severe COVID-19 in obese patients.

  • Limited medical resources and sample sizes limit the value of many of such works.

  • Further research is required to understand leptin's role in severe COVID-19 patients and its use as a therapeutic target.

  • Leptin has been emphasized as an important molecule with diverse immunological functions that can aid in addressing COVID-19 disease's progression as well as ensuring the development of effective vaccines for obese patients in whom elevated serum leptin levels could downregulate antibody production and class switching.
