Length of the second stage of labor in women delivering twins
Obstetrics and Gynecology Apr 02, 2021
Levin G, Meyer R, Many A, et al. - Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study including clinical data from the electronic medical record with the aim to determine the length of the second stage of labor in twin deliveries. In addition, they compared the length of the second stage in twin and singleton gestations. A total of 2,009 twin deliveries and 135,217 singleton deliveries from 2011 to June, 2020 were assessed. Findings revealed longer second-stage labor in twins than singletons. Epidural use was linked with a statistically significant increase in the length of the second stage of 40 minutes in nulliparous patients and 15 minutes in parous patients among women delivering twins. Admission to the neonatal intensive care unit and need for phototherapy were observed in correlation with second-stage length longer than the 95th percentile in twins.
