Length of stay, discharge disposition and 90-day complications and revisions following primary total hip arthroplasty: A comparison of the direct anterior, posterolateral and direct superior approaches
Journal of Arthroplasty Feb 14, 2020
Siljander M, et al. - This study was conducted to assess early postoperative complications and revision rates based on the surgical procedure, matching direct anterior, posterolateral, and direct superior approaches. After institutional review board approval, researchers applied a total joint arthroplasty database from a single institution to distinguish all individuals who underwent elective primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) between July 2013 and November 2017 with a direct anterior, posterolateral, or direct superior hip approach. Individuals were classified into groups based on surgical approach and compared on length of stay, discharge disposition and 90-day complication and revision rates. In this study, researchers performed 5,341 THA procedures, with 3,162 posterolateral, 1,846 direct anterior and 333 direct superior approaches. The direct anterior, posterolateral and direct superior strategies can all be efficiently applied, in the era of bundled payments.
